roaring berlin

roaring berlin

The 1920s was one of the most dazzling decades of the last century in Berlin. Although the myths surrounding the Roaring Twenties really only apply to a few years, the era has come to represent the emergence of a modern zest for life, including a vibrant nightlife, set against the backdrop of a buzzing metropolis — and many are still captivated by the images today. “Perhaps it’s that the era gave rise to ideas that could certainly still stand today,” says Boris Pofalla, who recently published a gigantic illustrated book on the topic together with Robert Nippoldt on Taschen Verlag, titled “Es wird Nacht im Berlin der Wilden Zwanziger” (Night Falls on Berlin in the Roaring Twenties). Cabaret, theatre, film, art, literature, and architecture: truly innovative ideas were born during this crazed time of upheaval, between the aftermath of World War I and the brewing catastrophic economic crisis and later Nazi rule. In this edition of COMPANION, we join author and journalist Boris and illustrator Robert on a tour inspired by the Roaring Twenties, a time that offered bohemians, night owls, and intellectuals much diversion and creative energy. Naturally, our tour takes us to the heart of the 1920s’ culture and nightlife: the Kurfürstendamm.

Charlotte Mieß is an incredible multitalent, that much is certain. Just like her hometown of Cologne. Could there be a better guide for the COMPANION District Tour of this Rhineland city? We don’t think so! Not only did Charlotte give us a tour leading through historic landmarks to more modern districts; with her cheerful Rhineland nature and Cologne dialect, she is a symbol for this modern, cosmopolitan city. Charlotte’s route is largely all within walking distance, but best explored by bike, if possible. She herself is an enthusiastic cyclist and walks along pushing her bike throughout our tour — that is, when she’s not cycling ahead of us to reach the next spot before we do.

matt’s stroll around sydney

matt’s stroll around sydney

Artist and Sydney local, Matt Cauchi, takes Companion on a tour of his Darlinghurst neighbourhood. There aren’t many people in Darlinghurst that Matt Cauchi doesn’t know. As the founder of local favourite Bloodhound Café, and a neighbour just a few doors down, Matt turned regular customers into lifelong friends, building a community around his little corner of the suburb. When he sold the café to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time artist, that same community followed him. Today, Matt’s works hang in Wentworth Gallery, as well as in iconic local spots including RM Williams at Westfield Bondi Junction and Dovecote. His art also takes its place in private collections worldwide, and in exhibitions across Sydney, Paris, London, Hong Kong and the USA.
